The History
Canterbury Golf Club is nationally recognized as one of the top 100 golf courses in the U.S. and one of the three finest in Ohio. Originally designed by Herbet Strong, the traditional Scottish course was expertly constructed to embrace the area’s natural topography resulting in a demanding, but fair, course with a great variation of holes.

From the Black tees, Canterbury plays at par 72 – 3531 yards out, 3429 yards in – for a total of 6960 yards. From the Blue tees, the yardage is 3285 out, 3205 in for a total of 6490. From the White tees, the yardage is 3135 out, 3089 in for a total of 6224. From the Green tees or forward tees, the course plays at par 72 – 2747 yards out, 2744 yards in – for a total of 5491 yards.

The Front Nine

Because of the many par fours, the front nine is a very good test of skill. Players shooting one or two under par will have a decent chance of posting a solid score for the round.

The Back Nine

The back nine begins with four possible birdie holes and concludes with three extremely difficult finishing holes, which sandwich around two interesting par fours, numbers 14 and 15.

Although all 18 holes are challenging, Canterbury is especially noted for its three finishing holes.

Lorum Ipsum Valorum

16 – Par 5 – 608 Yards

The first of three tough holes, players face a demanding tee and second shot. Both must be struck with precision in order to set up the approach to the green. The tee shot will go into a prevailing wind and for the results should be aimed to the right side of the uneven fairway, which falls down a deep embankment. The players will hit to an elevated plateau with their second shot. This sets up about a 130-yard-wedge to a small green that is sloped back to front.

Lorum Ipsum Valorum

17 – Par 3 – 215 Yards

This is the longest and most demanding par three on the golf course. Players must hit to an elevated, two-tiered green. Missing the green means a very difficult up and down for a par. Even when a player reaches the green with his tee shot, there is no guarantee of a par. It is an extremely hard green to putt since it is crowned with slopes in the middle of it. The green is heavily bunkered in front and on both sides and it drops off on both sides as well.

Lorum Ipsum Valorum

18 – Par 4 – 430 Yards

This is one of the best finishing holes in all of golf. It appears straight away, but does have a slight dogleg right. There are pronounced bunkers on the right, which come into play. The fairway slopes from right to left. Players will have a second shot of 170 to 200 yards to the green. It’s an uphill shot and even though the flagstick is in sight, players will not get a good feel of the depth and how far to hit their approach shots. The green is heavily bunkered, but open center left, accepting run up shots. The green is fairly flat, but has some subtleties. If players are not careful, putts can get away.
